The MSO’s first piece of the year was Bernstein’s puffed-up Candide Overture, followed with Bartók’s incredible Violin Concerto, his Concerto for Orchestra, and Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Weird choices can be signs of organizational health – the mayor was in the house Tuesday night –
and a moment into the Bartók with violinist Augustin Dumay and the Bernstein was forgotten.
