When I first heard the Tokyo String Quartet I was a squirming child and they had already played together for fifteen years. Later on, their recordings formed the background to many family dinners and summers spent happily reading in the yard, the speakers dragged through the house and pressed against the kitchen window screen. So I headed to Pollack Hall for the Montreal concert of their farewell tour with unusually personal and not professional trepidation.
Childhood is over.
