Here come the men

Tapestry Opera’s newest, biggest, and most complex production to date comes from that island of new opera where budgets are small and “plot” is not a dirty word. Librettist Coleen Murphy’s and composer Aaron Gervais’s Oksana G even tackles a contemporary subject. But the production, directed by Tom Diamond (seen May 28), is far better than the opera, which stumbles on its sprint to relevance. Oksana G’s cultural stereotypes could be taken from a page on Wikipedia: there’s the impossibly naive Ukrainian girl and her cartoonish small-town parents, trapped in a world where tarot card readers monopolize the distribution of news; a leather-clad gang of rapists unhinged by one or another Eastern European war, and the lone hero, a Canadian priest.
