“What always seems to me incredible with the reactions aroused by certain operatic productions is the fact that they are hardly imaginable in the case of other art performances, like films, videos, etc. A part of the audience and critics alike seem to be hoping that the opera might escape contemporary realities, social problems, and the violence that surrounds us. As if the opera should close its eyes and avoid looking at the audience, looking at the share of trouble, anguish and fear hidden in the soul of any of its members. But opera is not a museum of ancient art. It is a living art, which must resonate with all the energies of a given society, be they the worst.”
